Impressionism, expressionism, avant-garde: 100 masterpieces from the Frankfurt Städel Museum

1 April – 17 July

The exhibition at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni is the first opportunity to admire in Italy masterpieces from the famous collection of the Frankfurt Stadel Museum. Created in 1815 by the banker J.F. Stadel, it represents one of the most prestigious European collections of ancient and modern art. The exhibition, which displays mainly 18th-19th century works from the collection, offers a wide panorama, going from the Nazarines to the Romantics, from Realism to Impressionism, and from Symbolism to the Avant-Garde. The exhibition opens with Tischbein’s famous portrait of Goethe, which takes us into the early 18th century German Classicism. Then homage is paid to the French Impressionism, with Corot’s and Coubert’s realistic scenes, Renoir’s expressive portraits and Degas’ luxurious Parisian atmosphere. The central part is entirely dedicated to Symbolism, represented here by the unreal and disturbing worlds evocated by its greatest protagonists, Ensor, Moreau, Munch and Redon. The exhibition closes exceptionally with the visionary Experimentalism of Ernst, Klee and Picasso, whose works have had a decisive role in the beginnings of modern art.
